An article on skill-building in Psychology Today included research by Associate Professor of Psychology Christopher Soto. An expert on personality, in a paper published in Psychology Science, Soto and colleagues argue that “success in life is influenced by … social, emotional, and behavioral skills (SEB skills): a person’s capacities to maintain social relationships, regulate emotions, and manage goal- and learning-directed behaviors.”

An article in the Morning Sentinel highlights the recent $3.35-million gift for the $80-million Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts, "designed for innovative teaching, performing, working and creating, the center will foster creativity and collaboration among students and faculty across the discipline and will contribute to a growing robust arts ecosystem in central Maine."

Visiting Assistant Professor of English Adam Giannelli has been awarded a literature fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Giannelli was one of the 35 awardees of the NEA Literature Creative Writing (Poetry) Fellowship, receiving a $25,000 award aimed to enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. "As part of the first grantmaking announcement of FY 2021, the National Endowment for the Arts announced $1.2 million in FY 2021 Literature Fellowships to creative writers and translators, supporting both the development of new works of American literature and the translation into English of literary prose, poetry, and drama from writers around the world," according to its website.  

A story in Forbes magazine makes it clear that Colby's dedication to athletics, and its opening of the new Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center, is bold and defies the approach other schools are taking in the midst of the pandemic. "The athletic facility, now the largest in Division III and in the entire Northeast, is a wise investment," reporter Kurt Bandenhausen wrote. "Sports are a key part of Colby’s success, with one-third of Colby’s students recruited as varsity athletes, while nearly everyone else participates in club or intramural sports, as well as other recreational activities," the story continues.

An article in Mainebiz highlights the dramatic changes on one block of Waterville’s Main Street that in part is being driven by Colby. In the story, Vice President of Planning Brian Clark talks about how bringing older buildings back to life, building new ones, and the activity that it spurs "puts us [Waterville] in a position of strength."

USA Hockey magazine highlighted the generous gifts from Trustees Jack O’Neil ’77 and Tim O’Donnell ’87 to name the ice rink in the new Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center in honor of legendary Colby hockey coach Jack Kelley. “Ask anyone … and they’d tell you that Jack Kelley is Colby men’s hockey,” commented O’Neil in the page-11 story.  

Colby's announcement of the establishment of the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence was picked up by Philanthropy News Digest. "Scheduled to open in the fall, the first cross-disciplinary AI institute at a U.S. liberal arts college will also support the hiring of six faculty experts in disciplines ranging from computer science and genomics to sociology and English literature," the article reports.
