SportBusiness highlighted how Colby is pursuing LEED Gold certification for the new Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center, which is rare in sports and “unheard of at the collegiate level.” The story also quotes Vice President and Harold Alfond Director of Athletics Mike Wisecup about the new center providing the “best resource possible as part of a liberal arts education.” Read the full article below.

Professor of Government Dan Shea was tapped by NBC Boston for their story covering Vice President Pence's Oct. 19 visit to Maine. Pence visited Maine's second district, where Shea said "it's going to be real tight up there." However, Shea also said that "a lot of early indicators suggest the left is mobilizing,” adding that, “for the president, it’s critical that his base gets out as well.”
KHOU-11 out of Houston, Texas, aired a story recounting how a Posse Foundation scholarship created a path for Jazmin Zuniga '24 to enroll at Colby along with nine other students from the Houston area. "To have a group of friends that came from the same background as you, when you feel alone .... there's always a group of people you can trust," said first-gen student Zuniga

Scientific American
An article in Scientific American titled "Old Seaweed Reveals Secret of Monterey Sardine History" includes a quote from Loren McClenachan, the Elizabeth and Lee Ainslie Associate Professor of Environmental Studies. “This paper is an excellent example of the creative detective work of historical ecology,” said McClenachan, a marine ecologist who was not involved in the research. “There are thousands and thousands of similar specimens in collections around the world, and applying similar methods could teach us a great deal about long-term ocean change.”
"Chickens become America's new pet of choice during the pandemic," the Washington Times headline reads. And Professor of History Paul Josephson's new book, Chicken: A History from Farmyard to Factory, is featured prominently in the story.
“Chickens have millennia-long proximity to humans. Chickens, like dogs and cats, have lived with us in our houses, huts and barns, outside in the yards, and nearby in the fields. They become friends and playthings, not only meat- and egg-providers. They have been the focus of music and poetry, the objects of art and sculpture and the center attention of clubs,” the Times reported, quoting from Josephson's book.
Professor of Government Anthony Corrado offered his perspective on the "most expensive campaign in Maine history," between U.S. Senator Susan Collins and Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, in this Maine Public story. "Corrado also noted that the unspent cash between Gideon and Collins — more than $22 million — is more than was spent during the entire 2008 Senate race between Collins and Democrat Tom Allen," Maine Public reported.

Professor of Government Dan Shea was quoted in two articles on Oct. 18, including "Max Linn promises change in long-shot U.S. Senate campaign," a Portland Press Herald article about Linn, one of two Maine independent candidates. The second article ran on the Public News Service site and was titled "How Maine's Ranked-Choice Voting Could Impact Election."

Los Angeles Times
Professor of Government Anthony Corrado was quoted in a Los Angeles Times story about record-breaking fundraising by Democrat donors. “The amounts are so insane that it is getting to the point of what do you even do with it all?” Corrado, an expert on campaign finance reform told the Times. The two Senate candidates in Maine, he said, have already raised more in this race than every candidate for Senate and House in Maine combined over the last 20 years. “It is so far beyond the scope,” Corrado said. “The airwaves are completely saturated. I don’t even know if there is any more airtime to get.”

Colby's Oct. 15 announcement of a $101-million gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation was covered in the Morning Sentinel. “Having a sustainable partner like the Harold Alfond Foundation makes all the difference in the world,” President David Greene said Thursday. “They’ve been spectacular. Greg Powell is amazing. He is a force for good in the world. He carries on such a great family tradition. He really feels the responsibility of carrying out Harold Alfond’s wishes and goals, and he does it beautifully.”

In an Oct. 13 Los Angeles Times article covering the Democrats' goal to regain control in the Senate, Colby's most recent poll on the Maine Senate race is referenced. "Mid-September polling by Colby College gave Gideon a four-point lead as voters’ top choice (the state uses a ranked-choice system)," the Times reported.
