The Art Newspaper announced that the Colby College Museum of Art has acquired Coming to Jones Road #4: Under a Blood Red Sky (2000) by Faith Ringgold, a renowned American artist, activist, and teacher. The iconic painted textile strengthens the museum’s holdings of works by influential women artists and Black artists, and will be on view this spring.
ReVision Energy
Georgia Dettmann ’22, an environmental policy major, had her honors thesis research highlighted in a blog post on ReVision Energy’s website. Dettmann’s research is part of the Maine Cannabis Cultivation Working Group, an interdisciplinary research group at Colby exploring the expansion of legal cannabis cultivation in Maine convened by the Maine Drug Policy Lab, directed by Associate Professor of Anthropology Winifred Tate.

The Boston Globe included the Colby Museum of Art’s upcoming Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death exhibition in a story on the best arts events coming to New England this spring. The article noted how Wyeth produced drawings of his own funeral that will be “presented alongside pieces by contemporaries with parallel existential concerns, repositioning Wyeth with his conceptual kin.”

A “Vigil for Ukraine” on the steps of Miller Library, hosted by the Oak Institute for Human Rights, attracted regional media attention, including CBS and Fox affiliates. The Morning Sentinel also produced a photo essay on the powerful event, which featured reflections, music, poetry, and stories from Ukrainians and others directly impacted by the conflict.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Tizoc Chavez spoke to the Boston Globe about leadership and how Ukraine's president has galvanized the West. “In today’s world, we become incredibly cynical about political leadership," commented Chavez. "They lie to us; they lack political courage. When we see a leader who demonstrates courage and puts himself in harm’s way for the country, it resonates.”

Associate Professor of English Aaron Hanlon was cited in The Economist in an article about the impact of "cancel culture" on education initiatives.

Media outlets wrote about how Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Tizoc Chavez has been having discussions with his students on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Students are engaged,” said Chavez, but “the biggest challenge is students not having a frame of reference.” The story was also included in an article by Higher Ed Dive about colleges reacting to the conflict.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education
Amanda Stent, the inaugural director of Colby’s Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence, was included in a list published by Diverse: Issues in Higher Ed highlighting 25 outstanding women leaders in higher education. The piece referenced Stent’s extensive experience and background, including her role as NLP architect in the Chief Technology Office at Bloomberg.

The beautiful painting Étude by Elizabeth Nourse in the Colby College Museum of Art was included in a list of 100 “Great Works, In Focus” curated by the Washington Post. The work, part of the Lunder Collection, is number 41 in the list, and a summary of the piece notes that it “hangs in the wonderful Colby College Museum of Art.”
